Derek Frampton represents RAWW at quarterly meetings of the Police Sector Group for Wimbledon at which the Community Inspector Paul Carter reports on crime trends by Ward, and issues of concern are discussed. He is currently working to improve the flow of information from the Police to the community and RAWW in particular on significant local crime activity, particularly burglary. It is hoped that when a burglary occurs in our yarea, the Police will quickly provide us with details of the method of entry and any other factors such as descriptions, vehicles etc. that will enable residents to be alert and take precautions, and which also may help lead to arrests. We will alert members by email and other means as a matter of urgency. The same will apply to other repeat crimes such as street robbery, vehicle crime and damage to property.
Data on crime trends in Village and Raynes Park Wards will be made available from time to time on this web site or by email to members.
As part of community policing, each Ward has a beat policeman who can be contacted by phone as follows:
Village Safer Neighbourhood Team: 8721 2457.
Raynes Park Safer Neighbourhood Team: 8721 2459.
Another useful number for litter, graffiti, street rubbish, fly-tipping squad: 8545 4109.

The "Friends of Cottenham Park" aim is to help to maintain the park for the enjoyment of local residents of all ages and to make sure that the park is kept as clean and pleasant as possible. Since the Friends have been campaigning for improvements to the park Merton Council has replaced the windows to the park side of the Pavilion. This has improved the Pavilion considerably and it is now a much brighter and more pleasant space in which to hold small events. The tennis court fencing has now been renewed using the best quality fencing. This has completed the upgrading of the courts following the resurfacing last year. The "Friends" are continuing to contribute by improving the "garden" area in front of the Pavilion " pre previously the old bowling green. Many more shrubs have been planted together with two new trees, including a sweet chestnut tree which was given by a local resident. The "Friends" hope to be able to put two new benches into this area in the near future. There continue to be graffiti problems but the Council's graffiti team always responds promptly. The Friends are still trying to find a solution to the graffiti on the children's playground equipment.
Landscape architecture students from Kingston University have been working with the Friends on a project to gather local peoples views on how the park should be improved. In response to this have come up with some possible designs. To see what improvements local residents have said they would like to see in the park and some of the possible designs ideas the students have come up with in response to these please visit http://yourcottenhampark.blog.com.
The Friends have been unlocking the park from March to end October (when clocks change) since l996. This followed the disastrous year in '95 when the council took the decision to leave parks unlocked. There was just one hour that needed funding in order that the parks be unlocked/ and locked by the council. It seems that 10 years on the council is still deep in negotiations with staff over working practices.
